Types of Acne Explained

Many teens don’t realize that there are actually several different types of acne. It is important for you to know this because different types of acne require different types of treatment. If you choose the wrong option for your acne, then chances are you’re not going to eliminate those zits any time soon. Once you learn about the different types, though, you can start making smarter choices that will help you get rid of your acne for good.

Types of Acne – Acne Vulgaris

Acne vulgaris is the most common type of acne. Nearly everyone experiences a mild form of it at some point in their lives, usually during their teenage years. You can actually break mild acne vulgaris into four sub-categories of acne that include:

•           Whiteheads

•           Blackheads

•           Papules

•           Pustules

You probably already know about whiteheads and blackheads. A whitehead develops when your entire pore is clogged. Blackheads are like whiteheads, except the pore isn’t completely closed. The surface material oxidizes in the air and turns a dark color.

Papules are inflamed, red pimples that don’t have any type of head. These are a little less common than the other types of acne vulgaris. If you do have them, though, then you should resist the urge to squeeze them. Papules can easily cause scarring when they are squeezed.

Pustules are your everyday pimple: those annoying red areas of inflammation that have a little bit of yellow or white pus on top.

The best way to treat these common types of acne is to use an over-the-counter product that contains a low concentration of benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These products clean out pores and kill acne-causing bacteria.

Types of Acne – Severe Acne Vulgaris

Severe acne vulgaris can cause painful nodules and cysts. Nodules are particularly problematic. They not only cause scars, but they’re hard to treat because they are located under the skin’s surface. Nodules can vary in size. Some people experience nodules that run along their face for more than an inch.

Cysts are just like nodules, except they are filled with pus. Popping the cyst, however, won’t do any good. In fact, it will just increase your chance of getting a scar.

Severe acne vulgaris often responds to over-the-counter treatments that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Depending on the severity of your problem, though, you might need to visit a dermatologist for prescription medication. Some dermatologists even inject cortisone to reduce swelling.

Types of Acne – Acne Conglobata

Of all the types of acne that you want to avoid, acne conglobata is at the top of the list. This is the most severe form of acne vulgaris. Acne conglobata is instantly recognizable because it causes lots of interconnected nodules and cysts in addition to whiteheads and blackheads. This skin condition can cause problems on the face, shoulders, back, torso, and buttocks.

The severity of acne conglobata makes it difficult to treat. You will almost certainly need advice from a dermatologist. Using over-the-counter treatments during the early stages, however, might help you avoid this severe form of acne.
