Acne Cures: Myths and Realities

Myth #1 Benzoyl Peroxide Cures Acne

Like most popular myths, this one has a grain of truth. Benzoyl Peroxide does treat the bacteria that forms when oil is trapped inside sebaceous glands, which can reduce the severity of acne blemishes and help prevent new blemishes from forming. However, it is the oil itself which leads to the acne, and Benzoyl Peroxide by itself cannot make this go away. However, as part of a comprehensive skin care system for prevention and reduction of acne, Benzoyl Peroxide can be highly effective.

Myth #2 Avoid Greasy Foods and Your Acne Will Go Away

It’s natural to think that since pimples feel greasy, greasy foods are responsible for them. The reality is that if you are genetically predisposed to get acne, you will get it, no matter what you do or do not eat. Avoiding oily, greasy or any other kind of foods, for that matter, will not do anything to get rid of hormonal acne.

Myth #3 Washing Your Face Enough Will Get Rid of Your Acne

Some people think one of the most reliable acne cures is simply soap and water. Washing your face regularly, especially after sweating excessively, can get rid of excess oil, which will help control your breakout. However, excessive washing of the face will dry out the skin, leading to clogged pores, which can actually make your acne worse. Definitely wash your face, but try to wash in moderation, rather than constantly.

Myth #4 Acne is Untreatable

While acne is genetic and unavoidable for many, especially those in their teenage years but sometimes even beyond, it is far from untreatable. Acne cures can work, if you use the right ones. Merely rubbing some benzoyl peroxide such as that found in traditional over-the-counter acne medication isn’t likely to help much. That’s because these are usually used to treat pimples that have already formed. For acne that has already formed, your best bet is to wash your face and wait.

However, a comprehensive acne prevention system like Proactiv, which works to destroy bacteria and keep skin clean and fresh and pores unclogged before pimples start to form can be highly effective. If you are struggling with acne, you should look into such a system in conjunction with a consultation with your dermatologist for more ideas on the best way to treat your troublesome acne.
